The Story of Monkey Hangers

    Long long ago, in northern England, there was a town called X. X town was in war with a neighbor country. 

    One day, a great flood came, after a heavy rain. 

    In the flood, there was a monkey, drifted down from an unknown mountain. 

    People in X town never saw any monkeys. They were surprised. 

    "What a strange man!" 

    "Where does he come from?" 

    "Look! What is he wearing?" 

    "How ugly!" 

    "How strange!" 

    "Isn't he a spy?" 

    "I think he is a spy." 

    So, people of X town brought this poor monkey to the court. 

    Surely, the judge had never seen any monkeys either. 

    During the trial, no matter what the judge asked, this poor guy said nothing. He just made noises (Certainly! He did not know English!). So the judge decided, "This IS a spy from the enemy." 

    "He is a tough guy!" the judge said, "We should sentence him to death." 

    So, the monkey was hanged ! 

    It was too late for X town people to regret when later on they learnt what was a monkey. They and their story became well known. Since then people from X town have been called "MONKEY HANGERS".
